WBB’s Dr. Matos Guest Lectures for the INFORMS Speakers Program

WBB's own Dr. Rafael E. Matos, was invited to attend as Guest Lecturer of the Mathematics Department of the Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP), in Indiana, PA, on February 21st, as part of the Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences (INFORMS) Speakers Program. Dr. Matos gave the following lectures that day:

General Talk - Title: Operations Research and the Role of Probability and Statistics in Military Analysis                                                                                                                                                                                                                               Career talk - Title: Why Major In Mathematics Or Contemplate A Career Grounded In Mathematics?
Advanced Talk - Title: Practical Application of Efficient Frontiers - Optimization and Visual Analytics

The lectures were attended by around 100 very interested and engaging IUP students and faculty members, many of which attended all three presentations. Matos took the opportunity to share his career experiences in Operations Research and his integration into Organizational Psychology as examples of the diverse applicability of mathematics in multiple fields. The INFORMS Speakers Program is designed to provide access to excellent speakers who are recognized experts in operations research, analytics, and the management sciences. Students and faculty at universities benefit from this program, especially those trying to strengthen their OR program or launch a related program.


Dr. Rafael Matos

Dr. Rafael Matos
Operations Research Analyst

Dr. Matos obtained a Master of Science degree in operations research from the Naval Postgraduate School and after his department head tours, was assigned as an operations research analyst in the Requirements and Assessments Branch of the Office of the Chief of Naval Operations Assessment Division (N81) at the Pentagon. He also holds a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Organizational Psychology, with a concentration on cognitive decision making. His areas of expertise are statistical analysis, optimization, modeling and simulation, decision analysis, and organizational decision support facilitation. In addition to his commitment as President Elect to the Military Operations Research Society (MORS), Dr. Matos is also a member of the American Psychological Association (APA), the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology (SIOP), the Society for Consulting Psychology, the Society for Military Psychology, the Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences (INFORMS), the Military Officers of America Association (MOAA), and the National Society for Hispanic Professionals (NSHP).
